my brother has just told me he has cancer- found in the lungs and liver. He was told that they cannot do surgery so Chemo is the only way to treat. I do not know if it is primary liver or primary lung. But what I could not ask him was how long has he got realistically?

My mother had breast cancer lumpectomy Jun 9, 2010 - margins clear, no lymph node involvment. She then developed jaundice and a gastroenterologist determined that a reactive lymph node was pressing on main bile duct, he put in a stent and a lot of bile and 2 tiny gallstones ran out. (Pet scan shows no gallstones anywhere else). Her gastroenterolgist said her gallbladder does not need to come out at this time, but the oncologist wants it out and has set it up with a surgeon. I think radiation takes precedence at this time, but oncologit and surgeon believe otherwise, what am I missing?

Hi I had a lot of pelvic xrays up until the age of 12 (pretty much yearly, but more as an infant) due to "clicky hips". I did an online risk assessment for cancer based on a guess of how many xrays I had had done, and it was low (less than one percent). I am concerned about my ovarian cancer risk (I don't have a family history of this disease), as I have vague memories of the orthopedic surgeon saying I have a slightly increased risk with all the xrays I've had. So my question is, in your opinion, do I have anything to be concerned about? Should I have blood tests regularly?

Four years ago my mother has been diagnosed with Non Hodgkin peripheral T cell lymphoma not specified (NHL CS II B). She is now in remission after taking 8 CHOP therapies. Two months ago, ultrasound found 3 swollen lymphnodes is the neck area, just below the jaw. She has been given antibiotics for 3 weeks. The ultrasound she had today has shown that 2 lymph nodes have shrunk to 12 mm and the smallest one has disappeared. She has also checked ears, nose and throat and there is no infection there. My question is whether it is possible that she has relapse even if the lymph nodes are shrinking without any therapy?

Hi, I am a relatively healthy, non smoking 41 year old female and mother of four young girls. I had a chest xray a few days ago for pain in my ribs due to coughing from Bronchitis for about 4 weeks now. The xrays revealed a 3mm noncalcified nodule in the right lower lobe and a 2mm nodule in the left lower lobe with no evidence of infiltrate and costophrenic angles are clear. My doctor suggested repeat xray in 3 months but I'm getting a referral for pulmonologist tomorrow. How concerned should I be that this is cancer, especially with the nodules being noncalcified? Thank you so much! Robyn

A recent blood test showed high protein levels (8.4), so my doctor ordered a PE and IFE, CBC among other tests to follow-up. The results of those tests showed: WBC: 3.6 (low), RBC: 5.54 (high), Hemoglobin: 17.1 (high), Hematocrit: 49.9 (high), and IGM 242 (high) with 'Kappa and lambda typing appearing increased.' The PE scan is pending. Sed rate is 1. Can you help me to interpret these findings? Prior to this, I had an appointment with The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio set for August 12 with their rheumatology/immunology dept. and am wondering also if I am heading to the right department as I continue with the testing/diagnostic. Thank you.

I have had almost daily severe abdominal bloating/fullness for nearly a yr.Over the past few months my symptoms have become more problematic with decreased appetite, feeling very full after a few bites, urinary urgentcy, bladder/pelvic pain and discomfort, nausea, tiredness, leg pain, gas ( no heartburn or belching) and occational bowel incontinance.I have gone up several pant sizes with no weight gain. last yr my dr suggested stress and IBS.I do have regular soft stools and diareah but often do not feel better after bowel movements or OTC anti-gas/antacids meds, probiotics, etc. I have changed my diet with no relief. I do not have food allergies (been tested).I have had a complete physical with all the bloodwork and everything came back normal. I hate to have to go back to my dr for this but I am miserable and beginning to wonder if it could be ovarian cancer.I do have a strong family history of it. What could be going on and how do I find relief?

My mil was diagnosed with cancer after a surgeon did a scan to evaluate a lump in the center of her upper abdomen. This lump grew from a barely noticable, pea-sized lump to a protrusion slightly larger than a golf ball in about three months. The surgeon has reported to her family that he believes she has cancer in her breasts, lungs, bones, and that the tumor is widespread and attached in several places. He cannot operate and does not advise chemo or radiation, as her health is already fairly poor and her quality of life, also already poor, would likely suffer more than anything. She is not aware of her diagnosis at this point, as her physicians believe this, too, would negatively affect her outlook and quality of life. What we would like to know is what we can expect in terms of progression of the disease and length of time we may have left with her.

"Surgical Pathology Report" QUESTION: Does the following surgical pathology report mean that I have "Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia" of either breast? Both breast biopsies were examined in their entirety microscopically and show cystic change with areas of duct epithelial hyperplasia without the architectural and cytologic features that are associated with atypical duct epithelial hyperplasia on histologic examination." "This patient's fine needle aspiration has also been reviewed along with the biopsies. They show areas of duct epithelial hyperplasia with cytologic variability including visible nucleoli and some pleomorphism, i.e. variability in cell size appear to correspond to the areas of duct epithelial hyperplasia on the biopsy material." "Final Diagnosis" (1)Breast Bopsy with areas of cystic change and duct epithelial hyperplasia (R Breast) (2)Breast biopsy with cystic change, apocrina metaplasia, and duct epithelial hyperplasia (L Breast)

Got mastitis in Feb and again in April of 2010. My personal physician requested an ultrasound after the second round knowing that mastitis is not normal for a non-lactating female. The ultrasound and subsequent biopsy resulted in removal of a 9mm tumor. Margins were clear, all five nodes were negative. The initial pathology report came back with ERPR positive, but the Oncotype reversed that saying the tumor was ERPR negative (5.8 and 4.4 respectively) and HER2 negative (8.2). I've been told this means a 25% chance the cancer will recur in a distant organ - or the way I see it is a 75% chance that it won't! From what I've been told this is a very rare type of cancer and agressive. I've not been able to find much info on this type of cancer so was wondering if there was any info on treatment? I have made some dietary changes and do not want chemo if at all possible. Thanks!

does he really have multiple myeloma or is he still in the MGUS stage?

NO-ONE has given us ANY idea of prognosis. Now he is inoperable we need to have some idea how long he's got. For the record, everyone says how well he looks - although I tend to think that's standard speak! Are the 5 year stats applicable in my husband's case as he has had cancer for nearly 4 years now and been stage 4 since Nov 2007? Up until now he has undergone op after op and chemo after chemo which has obviously extended his life. But now he is inoperable surely it is fairly evident to someone with a fair amount of experience in this field so say what sort of life expectancy he has - even if a range of best case, worse case is provided which would be sufficient? He has also decided that he doesn't want any more chemotherapy because he would rather have quality of life and, let's face it, he's had enoughof it. I saw that someone who was diagnosed with stage 4 + inoperable was told about 30 months but surely someone like my hubby who has already gone through so much would have less than that? We would really, really appreciate some "educated" views taking into account his personal situation because it will enable us to plan certain things, for me to decide whether to continue working or not (as if it is 6 months to a year I would rather not continue but if it's 3 or 4 years I'll carry on for the time being as it's paying bills!) - Incidentally, we can "take" whatever the bottom line is and do not intend to "hold" anyone to anything!!!! Thank you so much for spending the time to read this and for your response. Incidentally, he has moderately differentiated mucinous adenocarcinoma

my father has multiple myeloma..iga at diagnosis is 5050..after one round of velcade it went to 5700. after first infusion of second round was hospitalized from continued lumbar lesion pain. while in hospital, found iga to be 4700..also, creatanine went to from 2.3 to 1.3...doc though wants to discontinue velcade and go to revlimid..feels we did not see a significant reduction in iga.. my question is, should we give up on velcade after a little over one round? have heard we need at least two rounds to see a response? also, how treatable is this disease.. will thalomid or revlimid help further reduce dad's cancer. we are very afraid and concerned for him..thanks

Healthy female diagnosed at 35 yr old with Stage II Papillary Follicular Thyroid Ca, Thyroidectomy I-131 Tx. Negative for remission, f/u every 3-6 months with ultrasound and biopsies in small nodule in the area of previous thyroid ca. All labs are negative. Labs last tested 4/10. 1/2010 Lumpectomy performed on (R) breast for clustered microcalcifications. No complications. Recently discovered lump in (L) axillae with tenderness. (R) axillae is negative for tenderness or swelling. No family history of Cancer, negative for alcohol and smoking. Four full-term pregnancies without complications. **I am wondering if I should follow-up with the breast surgeon or physician who follow me for my Thyroid Ca. They are both very well respected physicians at The James Cancer Center in Columbus, Ohio. I'm not sure which is the appropriate one to see. I also am wondering if you believe that there is a correlation between Thyroid Cancer and the axillary lump or the breast history and this new lump. Do you think that I have a more substantial risk for the lump to be cancerous than a woman my age (41) without the history. I considered waiting until my next menstrual cycle to see if it was related (I am currently at day 27 of my cycle), because I don't feel that I need to rush in to see a physician. My husband and family are suggesting otherwise. What would be your feelings about the urgency of being seen, is a month too long to wait? **I am an old non-practicing L&D nurse. Thank-you

For the last couple of years I have had bloody stools off and on. Sometimes I will get for a week or so and then it will be weeks or months before I have it again. It is always bright red and usually very painful when going to the bathroom. Recently in the last year I have also been getting tailbone pain. I have had it maybe 3 or 4 times and it lasts for a few days and goes away. It is more like pressure and it worse when I sit but doesn't really bother me when I am standing. I have read online about colon cancer and my grandma had it many years ago. Should I be worried.

.During chemotherapy, I experienced temporary menopause. But started regular periods again a year later. Now, I have missed my period for about 8 months. I have severe menopausal symptoms - 30-40 hot flashes a day, night sweats, abdominal weight gain. I've read about Amberen as a possible naturally alternative to HRT (which I obviously cannot consider). What do you think about the use of Amberen in my case?
